Stop the constant sipping for the Nexus Android
We've mentioned battery management earlier - and there's a way you can stop it plummeting downhill instantly.
If you head into the Settings menu and choose Accounts and Sync, there's a large checkbox for background data.

If you only periodically check things like social networks or email, then this is a great way to save some power, as you can get the same functionality by just manually updating when you open the app.
It does mean things like push notifications won't work, but if you're after a decent battery saving and don't care about instant updates, give this a go.

Iphone Airplane Mode

Airplane mode disables the wireless features in order to reduce potential interference with aircraft operation and other electrical equipment.
Turn on airplane mode.
·         Go to Settings and turn on airplane mode.
When Airplane mode is on, an icon of an airplane will appear in the Left hand corner at the top of the screen. With Airplane mode on there is
No Phone, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth signals are emitted from Iphone + GPS reception is turned off, disabling many of Iphone features. You won’t be able to use apps that require these signals, such as connecting to the Internet, placing or receiving phone calls or messages, getting visual voice and so on.

If allowed by the aircraft operator and applicable laws and regulations, you can continue to listen to music, watch videos, browse email, calendar, and other date you’ve previously received, and use apps that don’t require and Internet connections.

If Wi-Fi is available and allowed by the aircraft operator and applicable laws and regulations, go to Settings- Wi-Fi to turn it on.
You can turn on Bluetooth in Settings- General- Bluetooth.

Unlock the power of voice for the Nexus Android
We mentioned we didn't like the voice input icon on the keyboard, but that doesn't mean we aren't fans of voice search.
From calling and navigation to text entry and Google searching, your voice can be activated by simply holding down the search key.

If you're already in an application (say text message editor) you can hit the icon to simply say your text - although you'd have to ask whether a phone call makes more sense at this point.

Make and rename folders on the Iphone
Organizing your apps is so much easier on iPhones running iOS4. Just tap and drag apps on top of each other and you create intelligently named folders. You can rename the folder names Apple chooses though - just tap and hold on an app to make them wiggle, then tap on the folder name and start typing.

Check to see if there is updated BlackBerry Device Software on the BB

Depending on your smartphone model, this feature might not
be supported.
On the Home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon.
Click Device > Software Updates.

Boost your media experience on the Nexus Android
The media experience on the Android 2.3 platform is unfortunately not that good natively - incompatibility with many file types and basic operation mar the experience.
For music, we recommend MixZing - it has all the features of the Android experience but also has Genius-like abilities to mix a playlist based on a single song choice, as well as a decent inbuilt EQ make it a real step up.

Add an accent on the e and a key on the Iphone
It's possible to quickly add a variety of accents to the letters "e" and "a" when typing on the iPhone's keyboard. Just tap and hold on either key to reveal more options, like "é", for example.

Make all hidden apps visible on the home screen on the BB
On the home screen, press the key > Show All Icons. To
unhide the app, highlight it and then click Hide Icon to clear
the check mark. If the icon is hidden in other panels, you can
unhide the icon in all panels, or in the current panel only. If
Show All Icons does not appear in the menu, there are no apps
hidden from view.
Inbuilt battery graph ( Samsung Nexus Android)
A massive problem for smartphones is the battery maintenance - so many devices have offered such poor battery life that some have been rendered virtually unusable.
The Nexus S isn't that bad in terms of holding its charge, but if you want to see what's happening with your battery, the phone comes with a battery graph built in.
Simply go into Settings, then tap About Phone. Open Battery Use and hit the smaller battery graph at the top - this then opens up into a fully-fledged graph complete with information on how fast your power depleted and what the phone was doing at the time.

Tap to focus/zoom in Camera - Iphone
The iPhone 4's new 5 megapixel camera has a fantastic digital zoom. But to activate it you first need to focus on an object – like a face, for example, in your view. Do this by simply tapping anywhere on the screen. A white square will appear showing you the object that the iPhone is focused on. A zoom bar will also appear, which you can use to zoom into the object you've picked.

Tip # 167- April 18th

Change what happens when you type on the Home screen for the BB
Before you begin: Depending on your typing input language, you might not be able to use shortcut keys to open applications.
  1. On the Home screen, press the key > Options.
    • To search your BlackBerry® smartphone or the Internet when you type on the Home screen, change the Launch by Typing field to Universal Search.
    • To open applications when you press shortcut keys, change the Launch by Typing field to Application Shortcuts.
  2. Press the key > Save.

Reclaim the comma on the Samsung Nexus ( Android)
One of the first irritations you'll encounter with the Google Nexus S is the lack of a comma - the keyboard has a voice search icon where the oft-used symbol should be.
But there's a way to reclaim it - head into Settings, and choose Language and Keyboard. Tap Android Keyboard and in there you'll see a dropdown menu labeled Voice input.
From here you can select whether the voice search icon is on the front screen, the symbol menu or delete it altogether - and more importantly, the comma is back where it belongs.

Multitasking: update your apps for your Iphone
Multitasking is one of the big new features of iOS4, but while all Apple's apps (like Calculator and iPod) are compatible, all third party apps will need to be upgraded to properly multitask. So, you'll need to head to the App Store app on your phone, then visit the Updates section to download a update for each app. This can take a while, but don't forget, the App Store app also multitasks (as it always has), so double tap the Home button to get back to it to save time after selecting each update. There's also a handy "Update all" button to tap.
